Why visit
One of the most beautiful cities on Earth, Naqsh-e Jahan Square (one of the world's largest), the turquoise-tiled Shah Mosque. The Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque. The Ali Qapu Palace. The historic Vank Cathedral in the Armenian quarter. The Si-o-se-pol bridge with its 33 arches, the labyrinthine Grand Bazaar, and the famous miniature painters of Hasht Behesht.
When to avoid
Iran is under heavy Western sanctions and travel advisories warn of arbitrary detention of foreign nationals. Check current policy. Photography near military or government buildings is risky. Women must observe hijab. Foreign visitors are no exception. The Zayandeh River sometimes runs dry due to upstream diversions. Credit cards from most countries don't work. Bring cash and convert at official exchanges.
