Why visit
Use Jaca as a base for the Spanish Pyrenees, the Astun and Candanchu ski resorts, the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park (UNESCO), the dramatic monastery of San Juan de la Peña tucked under a cliff, and the Romanesque churches of the Serrablo. Add the citadel's deer-grazed moat, excellent migas and ternasco lamb, and a relaxed Pyrenean atmosphere.
When to avoid
Do not visit Jaca expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. For Jaca, the practical constraints are part of the itinerary: hours, transport, weather, crowds, and the distance between worthwhile areas. For Jaca, check the practical conditions first, then decide whether walking, transit, or a taxi makes sense for each move. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Jaca as a base rather than the whole destination.
