Jacksonville is the most populous city proper in the U.S. state of Florida, located on the Atlantic coast of northeastern Florida. It is the county seat of Duval County, with which the city consolidated in 1968. It is the tenth-most populous U.S. city and the largest city in the Southeast, with a population of 949,611 at the 2020 U.S. census. The Jacksonville metropolitan area, at over 1.76 million residents, is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in Florida and 38th-largest in the United States. City-county consolidation greatly increased Jacksonville's official population and extended its boundaries, placing most of Duval County's population within the new municipal limits; Jacksonville grew to 900 square miles. It is the largest city by total area, land and water, in the contiguous United States.

Atlantic beaches at Jax Beach and Atlantic Beach, the historic Riverside-Avondale district with its bungalows and shaded oaks, the Cummer Museum gardens, the Friendship Fountain at Southbank, and the country's largest urban park system. NFL Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field, a thriving craft-beer scene around King Street, and easy access to St. Augustine (America's oldest city) just south.
Do not visit Jacksonville expecting every useful stop to be close together or easy to improvise. For Jacksonville, the practical constraints are part of the itinerary: hours, transport, weather, crowds, and the distance between useful areas. Use Jacksonville with realistic movement plans, especially where car dependence or heat can take over. A practical route in Jacksonville may need rideshares or a car if transit does not connect the useful stops.
Summer (June to September) is hot, humid and stormy; highs around 32 to 34°C, sticky 22°C nights, and afternoon thunderstorms nearly daily. Hurricane season peaks August to October. Sea breezes off the Atlantic offer some relief. Beach mornings, afternoon retreats indoors, and late-evening waterfront dinners define the rhythm. Pack hydration and reef-safe sunscreen.
Winters are mild and the driest stretch; January highs around 18 to 20°C, lows near 6 to 10°C, with occasional cold snaps that can dip near freezing. Bright sun and moderate humidity make this the prime tourism window. Excellent for outdoor exploring, river kayaking and beach walking. Pack a fleece for cool mornings; the wind off the river bites.
