Why visit
The 13.4-meter Great Buddha (Daibutsu) at Kōtoku-in has sat under open sky since a tsunami swept its hall away in 1498. Hase-dera's hillside garden of jizō statues and Engaku-ji's Zen complex around Kita-Kamakura station are essentials, then walk the Daibutsu Hiking Trail through bamboo before lunch at a Yuigahama beach café. Plum blossoms in February, hydrangeas in June, and koyō in late November are each peak moments.
When to avoid
Weekend crowds in cherry-blossom and hydrangea seasons are crushing, go midweek or arrive at 7am. Summer (July to August) is hot, humid, and prone to typhoons. The Enoden train fills shoulder-to-shoulder on weekends. Consider walking the coast road instead. Use Kamakura with a little spare time rather than a rigid chain of bookings. For Kamakura, closures and movement deserve attention, whether the place is small and quiet or large and slow to cross.
