Why visit
Use Kampong Thom if you want to slow down the route between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and give proper time to Sambor Prei Kuk. The city itself is practical, with markets, food, hotels, and transport, but the cultural reason to come is archaeological. Sambor Prei Kuk helps place Angkor in a longer history of Khmer architecture and state formation. Staying nearby can make the visit less rushed and allows an early start before heat builds.
When to avoid
Do not expect Kampong Thom to provide the museum depth, hotel range, or evening life of Siem Reap. Treat it as a functional base and plan the archaeological visit carefully. Heat, rain, and road time matter. If your Cambodia itinerary is short and you are not focused on pre-Angkorian history, it may be more efficient to continue directly between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
