Kenroku-en garden alone justifies the trip, especially in snow, when caretakers raise rope yukitsuri cones over the pines. Pair it with the contemporary art at the 21st Century Museum, then wander the wooden lattice facades of Higashi Chaya. Omicho Market serves snow crab and sea urchin pulled from the cold Sea of Japan that morning. Kanazawa is also the easiest base for day trips into the Noto Peninsula and the gassho-zukuri villages of Shirakawa-go.
Do not visit Kanazawa expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. The map of Kanazawa is only half the problem. Hours, heat, rain, crowds, and transport decide what is realistic. A safer and clearer day in Kanazawa usually comes from grouping nearby sites and avoiding unnecessary late or awkward transfers. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Kanazawa as a base rather than the whole destination.
