Why visit
Walk Cijin Island's seafood street, take the Light Rail loop past harbor warehouses turned galleries, and ride the cable car up Shoushan for sunset over the strait. Liuhe Night Market is a southern food highlight, papaya milk, oyster omelets, and grilled squid. The MRT Formosa Boulevard station's 'Dome of Light' is the world's largest stained-glass installation. October to March is best.
When to avoid
Do not visit Kaohsiung expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. The map of Kaohsiung is only half the problem. Hours, heat, rain, crowds, and transport decide what is realistic. A safer and clearer day in Kaohsiung usually comes from grouping nearby sites and avoiding unnecessary late or awkward transfers. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Kaohsiung as a base rather than the whole destination.
