Why visit
It's a relaxed riverside stop, swim in the turquoise Mrežnica with its cascade of low waterfalls, walk the star fortress promenade, and tour the surprisingly modern Aquatika freshwater aquarium. The Homeland War Museum, built around a former barracks, gives a sobering look at the city's frontline role in the 1990s. From here it's an easy push to Plitvice Lakes (90 minutes south) or Zagreb (under an hour north).
When to avoid
Do not visit Karlovac expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. The map of Karlovac is only half the problem. Hours, heat, rain, crowds, and transport decide what is realistic. A safer and clearer day in Karlovac usually comes from grouping nearby sites and avoiding unnecessary late or awkward transfers. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Karlovac as a base rather than the whole destination.
