Why visit
Karmiel itself is more functional than visual, but its three-day Dance Festival in late July fills the town with thousands of folk and contemporary dancers from around the world, a remarkable spectacle. The surrounding Galilee draws most travellers: nearby hiking trails on Mount Meron, the artists' village of Tzfat, the ruins at Bar'am, and Druze villages serving labneh and stuffed grape leaves are all within 30 minutes. The Sherwood Forest urban park gives easy walking paths if you're spending the night.
When to avoid
August is parchingly hot, highs above 33°C with strong sun on the limestone. The city is close to the Lebanese border (about 25 km), so check current security advisories before travel. The Israeli Home Front Command map and your country's foreign office both update regularly. Dance Festival week books out every guesthouse in the Galilee. Shabbat (Friday sundown to Saturday sundown) shutters most shops and buses.
