Why visit
Travel to Kharkiv is not currently advised, see the avoid section. In peacetime, the city offered the soaring Soviet-era Freedom Square (one of Europe's largest), the constructivist Derzhprom complex, the gold-domed Annunciation Cathedral, and a deep cafe and student culture from its many universities. The metro system's deep stations have served as bomb shelters since 2022. When Ukraine's victory permits return, post-war Kharkiv promises an unparalleled lesson in resilience.
When to avoid
Active war zone. Russia continues to strike Kharkiv with missiles, glide bombs, and drones. Civilian casualties are regular. Western foreign offices advise against all travel. Air-raid sirens, curfews, and damaged infrastructure are constant. Consular support is severely limited. Do not travel for tourism purposes, only humanitarian, journalistic, or essential business travel with proper risk planning, insurance, and local fixers should be considered. Check your government's current advisory before any movement.
