Why visit
Visit Khartoum for museums, galleries, and collections, archaeology and older urban layers. The value of Khartoum is clearest when museums, streets, religious buildings, markets, food, and nearby landscape are read together. A good itinerary should stay selective. For Khartoum, choose the anchor first. The cafe, market, church, gallery, or evening event should follow from that location. That gives Khartoum room to show itself without turning the day into unrelated stops. For Khartoum, nearby landscapes and day trips should explain the city, not turn the itinerary into transit work.
When to avoid
Active civil war. Since April 2023 Khartoum has been a primary battleground between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. Much of the city has been destroyed or looted, including the National Museum, airport, and presidential palace. Western governments have evacuated embassies and advise against all travel. The humanitarian situation is catastrophic. Do not travel under any circumstances except essential humanitarian work with full security planning.
