Why visit

Kinshasa rewards curious, well-prepared travellers. The National Museum of the DRC opened in 2019. A strong Congolese-art collection. The Symphony Orchestra of Kinshasa is a remarkable all-amateur ensemble featured in the documentary 'Kinshasa Symphony'. And the live music scene around Matonge keeps Congolese rumba pumping into the small hours. Boat trips to Stanley Pool and Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary (an hour out of town) round out a visit. Try poulet moambe and fufu with palm-nut sauce.

When to avoid

DRC: most Western governments advise against all but essential travel, citing crime, civil unrest, and disease (Ebola, mpox, malaria). Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. Bring proof. Crime including armed robbery is common. Do not walk at night and use trusted drivers. Power outages are constant. ATMs unreliable, carry US dollars in pristine condition. Photographing government buildings, bridges, or anything that looks military is prohibited and risky. Hire a local fixer.

About Kinshasa

Kinshasa, formerly named Léopoldville from 1881 to 1966, is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kinshasa is one of the world's fastest-growing megacities, with an estimated population of 18.5 million in 2026. It is the most densely populated city in the DRC, the third-most populous city and third-largest metropolitan area in Africa, the world's seventh-most populous city proper and fourth-most populous capital city. It is the leading economic, political, and cultural center of the DRC, housing several industries including manufacturing, telecommunications, banking, and entertainment.
