Why visit
Mojiko Retro is the highlight, a beautifully restored district of Meiji- and Taisho-era European-influenced port buildings, useful for a half-day stroll with yaki-curry (the local baked-curry specialty). Walk the undersea Kanmon Tunnel to Shimonoseki, climb Sarakura-yama for one of Japan's three great night views, and visit the Kokura Castle and TOTO Toilet Museum (yes, really, it's surprisingly fascinating). The Yawata Steel Works heritage tour requires advance booking.
When to avoid
The city sprawls awkwardly across five former towns, don't expect a unified center. Trains and buses between districts can eat time. Tsuyu rainy season (mid-June to mid-July) is sticky and damp. Typhoon season (Aug to Sep) occasionally disrupts ferries to Shimonoseki and Korea. Avoid arriving on a Monday if museums matter, most close.
