Why visit

Kobe beef in its hometown is really transcendent, teppanyaki at Mouriya or Steakland is the local rite of passage. Beyond beef, ride the ropeway up Mount Rokko for one of Japan's three great night views, soak in Arima Onsen's iron-rust 'kinsen' hot springs, and walk Kitano's preserved Western homes. The Earthquake Memorial Museum (Hito to Bosai Mirai Center) is a sobering, brilliantly designed account of 1995. Sake brewing tours in Nada district round things out.

When to avoid

Tsuyu rainy season (mid-June to mid-July) is humid and damp. Typhoon season (Aug to Sep) occasionally brings flooding. Premium Kobe beef is really expensive, lunch sets are the budget-friendly route at around ¥5,000 to 7,000 vs dinner at ¥15,000+. Avoid Mondays for many museums, and Golden Week (late April to early May) packs Mount Rokko and Arima Onsen.

About Kobe

Kobe, officially Kobe City, is the capital city of Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. With a population of around 1.5 million, Kobe is Japan's seventh-largest city and the third-largest port city after Tokyo and Yokohama. It is located in the Kansai region, which makes up the southern side of the main island of Honshū, on the north shore of Osaka Bay. It is part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kyoto. The Kobe city centre is located about 35 km (22 mi) west of Osaka and 70 km (43 mi) southwest of Kyoto.
