Why visit
Konak is where you'll spend most of your İzmir time, wander the Kemeraltı Bazaar's centuries-old caravanserais, sip Turkish coffee at the Kizlaragasi Han, photograph the Clock Tower at golden hour, and ride the Asansor up to the Jewish Karatas neighbourhood for sea views. The Roman Agora gives a glimpse of ancient Smyrna. Walk the Kordon at sunset for a beer at one of the dozen waterfront cafes. İzmir is Turkey's most secular, liberal city, a refreshing contrast to the interior.
When to avoid
Summer afternoon heat in Konak Square reflects off the marble plaza intensely, visit early or late. The Kemeraltı Bazaar is dense and easy to get lost in. Pin your hotel on Maps before plunging in. Earthquake risk: the 2020 Aegean quake killed over 100 in İzmir. Check your hotel's structural rating. Friday midday prayers shut some bazaar shops briefly. Avoid Konak Pier shopping mall on weekends, packed.
