The pedestrianised Hlavná (Main Street) is one of central Europe's loveliest, a long elliptical square anchored by St. Elisabeth's Cathedral and the singing fountain. Climb the cathedral tower for the Slovak countryside view, tour the underground archaeological complex showing medieval Košice beneath the modern surface, and visit the East Slovak Museum's hoard of 2,920 gold coins discovered hidden in a cellar in 1935. Excellent base for the High Tatras (3 hours northwest) and Tokaj wine country.
Do not visit Košice expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. For Košice, the practical constraints are part of the itinerary: hours, transport, weather, crowds, and the distance between worthwhile areas. In Košice, it is better to build a tight route than to rely on long transfers between secondary stops. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Košice as a base rather than the whole destination.
