Why visit
The Ipatievsky Monastery on a peninsula where the Kostroma joins the Volga is the showpiece, the white-walled 14th-century complex contains the room where the Romanov dynasty began. Across town, the Museum of Wooden Architecture preserves rural log churches and izba peasant houses brought from villages across the region. The Trading Rows are atmospheric for a stroll, and the Susanin Square radial street plan is a textbook neoclassical layout. Try Kostroma cheese, a regional specialty.
When to avoid
Russia: due to ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine, most Western foreign offices currently advise against all travel, sanctions, payment-card outages (Visa/Mastercard don't work), and limited consular support are major obstacles. Check your government's advisory before any planning. Winters are bitterly cold with heavy snow and ice. Summer mosquitoes near the Volga can be aggressive at dusk. Avoid arriving by overnight train without booked transfers, the station is far from the center.
