Why visit
The Maritime Museum of Finland (in the soaring Vellamo cultural center) is really excellent, deep dives into Baltic shipping, ice-breaking, and naval history. Tour the Imperial Fishing Lodge to see how the last Romanovs spent their summers. Walk the harbour to see the icebreaker Tarmo (1907, the world's oldest preserved icebreaker), explore Sapokka Water Garden, and ferry out to the lighthouse island of Kökar. The Maretarium aquarium showcases Baltic species kids will love.
When to avoid
Outside of summer the city is sleepy, with shorter cafe hours and many island ferries on reduced schedules. Mosquitoes near the river and islands can be heavy in June to July. Pack repellent. Ice and slush make harbour walks treacherous January to March. Avoid arriving without booked accommodation in late July during the Kotka Maritime Festival, the city packs out.
