Why visit
The Šumarice Memorial Park is the city's emotional heart, a sprawling park of monumental sculptures and the moving 'Interrupted Flight' monument to the murdered schoolchildren. The Old Foundry industrial museum and the Princely Serbia Museum chronicle the city's role in 19th-century Serbian state-building. Try šumadija tea (rakija mulled with honey and herbs) and žitni hleb bread. Easy trips to Topola's wine country and the historic Royal Karageorgevich estates.
When to avoid
Outside the memorials and Old Foundry, central Kragujevac is a working industrial city without major tourist sights, budget at most a day. Summers can be hot and dusty in the basin. Public transport beyond town is limited. Rent a car for wine-country trips. The Zastava car factory (now Fiat) sometimes has labour unrest that affects city traffic. Check current advisories.
