Why visit
Stolby Nature Reserve is the standout, a free protected area where the Cossack-era Stolbism (rock-climbing without ropes, in defiance of tsarist police) was born. Take the cable car up to the upper plateau at Bobrovy Log ski resort for panoramic views, ride the Yenisei on a hydrofoil, and visit the Surikov Estate Museum honouring the great Russian historical painter Vasily Surikov, born here. The Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Dam at Divnogorsk is an awe-inspiring Soviet engineering feat.
When to avoid
Russia: due to ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine, most Western foreign offices currently advise against all travel, sanctions, payment-card outages (Visa/Mastercard don't work), and limited consular support are major obstacles. Check your government's advisory carefully before any planning. Krasnoyarsk has notoriously bad winter air pollution due to coal heating and the river mist. Sensitive travellers should pack a respirator. Winters are brutally cold. Vast distances. Flight times from Moscow exceed 4 hours.
