Why visit
The Mies van der Rohe houses are the cultural draw, two of the master's pre-emigration brick villas now show rotating contemporary art shows. The German Textile Museum traces silk production from raw cocoon to finished damask. Burg Linn moated castle on the city's east edge is a compact medieval complex with archaeological museum. The Krefelder Zoo and the rococo Schloss Burg are family-friendly options. Try Halver Hahn (rye roll with aged Gouda), a Rhineland snack.
When to avoid
Krefeld doesn't fill more than a day for most visitors, use it as a stop between Cologne, Düsseldorf, and the Dutch border. The city's industrial flavour shows in some districts. Sundays in Germany shutter most shops. The 2020 zoo fire that killed 50 monkeys and apes was a devastating event. The rebuilt ape house opened in 2022. Avoid driving in town during Karneval (February to March), streets close.
