Why visit
Kuching is the gateway to Borneo's wildlife and tribal culture, day trips reach Bako National Park (proboscis monkeys, bearded pigs), the Semenggoh Wildlife center (semi-wild orangutans), and Iban longhouse stays up the Lemanak River. In town, walk the riverfront waterfront promenade at sunset, tour the Sarawak Museum, and eat Sarawak laksa (a complex prawn-coconut noodle soup) at Choon Hui Cafe. The Sarawak Cultural Village 30 minutes north is a worthwhile longhouse-living introduction.
When to avoid
Heavy haze from Indonesian peat fires (typically Aug to Oct) can shut schools and ground flights. Check air quality before booking. Borneo's interior road network is limited, so plan rural trips with a local operator. Long-tail boat rides upriver can be uncomfortable. Bring sun cover and waterproof gear. Avoid crocodile-inhabited rivers without local guidance, Sarawak has serious estuarine crocodile populations.
