Why visit
Kumamoto Castle, even mid-restoration, is really awe-inspiring, the keep reopened in 2021 with a moving exhibition on earthquake reconstruction. Walk Suizen-ji Joju-en, a 17th-century strolling garden that recreates 53 stations of the Tokaido road in miniature. Day-trip to Mount Aso to peer into the steaming Nakadake crater (when volcanic activity permits) and the lush Aso caldera farmland. Try basashi (raw horse meat sashimi) and karashi-renkon (mustard-stuffed lotus root), both Kumamoto specialties.
When to avoid
Mount Aso eruption status changes, check the Japan Meteorological Agency before visiting. The crater closes when sulphur levels spike. Tsuyu rainy season (mid-June to mid-July) is humid and damp. Typhoon season (Aug to Sep) brings flooding risk. The 2016 earthquake damage means some castle areas remain off-limits. Avoid Mondays for several museums.
