Why visit
Kunming itself is pleasant rather than spectacular, the surreal Stone Forest UNESCO site (90 km southeast) of towering karst pinnacles is the obvious draw day trip. In town, walk Green Lake Park where retirees practice tai chi at dawn, visit the Yunnan Provincial Museum for excellent Bronze Age finds, and tour the Western Hills above Dianchi Lake via cable car. Try guoqiao mixian (crossing-the-bridge rice noodles), the city's signature dish. Kunming is the gateway to Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La.
When to avoid
Dianchi Lake has had severe algae-bloom pollution. Don't expect a swimmable lake. Air quality fluctuates and can be poor in winter inversions. China visa requirements are now mostly streamlined for many nationalities (15-day visa-free for some), but check current rules. Mass tourism has commercialised the Stone Forest, visit at opening (8am) to beat the tour-bus crush. Some western Yunnan border areas require special permits.
