Why visit
Travel to Kursk is not currently advised, see the avoid section. In peacetime, the city offered the powerful Kursk Bulge State Memorial complex with restored T-34 tanks and a moving battlefield diorama, the gold-domed Znamensky Cathedral, and the leafy Boyev Square promenade. The Kursk-Magnetic Anomaly (one of the largest iron ore deposits on Earth) gives the surrounding region distinctive deep-red soils visible from rural roads.
When to avoid
Russia: due to ongoing armed conflict with Ukraine, Western foreign offices advise against all travel, sanctions, payment-card outages, and limited consular support are major obstacles. Crucially, Kursk Oblast was the site of a Ukrainian cross-border incursion in August 2024 and continues to see periodic shelling, drone attacks, and military activity along the border. The region is partially evacuated. Do not travel under any circumstances except essential business with full security planning. Check current advisories.
