Why visit
Kutaisi is a western Georgia base for Gelati, caves, canyons, local food, and routes toward Svaneti or the Black Sea. It works when the trip wants Georgia beyond Tbilisi.
When to avoid
Kutaisi airport flights have grown so cheap that flight times can be unsociable (4am departures common). Marshrutka mini-buses are the main intercity transport, they leave when full and can be uncomfortable. Some street stray dog packs have caused safety concerns. Give them space. The Russian-occupied South Ossetia border lies 90 km north. Check current situation before any northward driving. Sundays in religious areas (especially around monasteries) involve services, dress modestly.
