Why visit
Visit Kyoto for temples, gardens, craft, literature, food, performance traditions, and the way seasonal change shapes cultural space. Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Nishiki Market, the Philosopher's Path, Nanzen-ji, Daitoku-ji, Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari, and smaller subtemples all reward selective planning. For one or two days, choose one temple district in the morning, one market or craft area, and one garden or evening walk. With longer time, add Nara, Uji, Ohara, Kurama, or quieter temple days rather than chasing every famous gate and garden.
When to avoid
Kyoto is heavily visited, and the famous routes can feel crowded and repetitive. Buses are slow at peak times, taxis can be useful, and early mornings matter around Higashiyama, Fushimi Inari, and Arashiyama. Avoid peak cherry blossom and autumn foliage weekends if crowds will spoil the trip. Summer heat and humidity are also serious, so build the day around mornings, interiors, shaded gardens, and evening walks.
