Why visit
Stargazing in the Elqui Valley is the obvious draw attraction, the dry desert air, high altitude, and minimal light pollution make this one of Earth's premier astronomy sites. Tour Mamalluca or Cerro Tololo observatories, or simply step out of your hostel in Pisco Elqui for naked-eye Milky Way views. La Serena itself offers the Archaeological Museum's Diaguita pottery, the Mercado La Recova for local crafts, and the long beach for relaxed walks. Pisco distilleries in Vicuña welcome tasting visitors.
When to avoid
Pacific Ocean here is cold (Humboldt Current), swimming is more for the brave than for relaxation. The beach can be windy. Earthquake risk: a magnitude 8.3 quake hit nearby in 2015. Mid-January to mid-February brings Chilean summer crowds. Book ahead. Inland Elqui Valley roads are narrow and winding. Rent a car only with mountain experience.
