There's relatively little tourist infrastructure, most visitors come for political-curiosity, journalism, or as a stop on overland routes from Morocco to Mauritania. The Spanish colonial cathedral (now a community hall) and the Place du Méchouar central square give a sense of the city's layered history. The nearby Atlantic beaches at Foum El Oued offer surfing in cold but consistent waves. Camel and 4WD trips into the Sahara dunes around the city can be arranged with caution.
Western Sahara is a politically sensitive disputed territory. Morocco controls about 80% behind the Berm sand wall. The Polisario controls the eastern desert. Photographing military or government installations is prohibited and risky. Foreign journalists have been deported. Travel insurance is unreliable. Most Western governments advise caution. Some advise against non-essential travel. Don't engage in pro-independence discussions in public. Land-mine risk persists in the Berm zone. Sunni-Islamic conservative dress expected.

Laayoune or El Aaiún is the largest city of the disputed territory of Western Sahara, with a population of 271,344 in 2023. The city is the de jure capital of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, though it is under de facto Moroccan administration as occupied territory. The modern city is thought to have been founded by the Spanish captain Antonio de Oro in 1938. From 1958, it became the administrative capital of the Spanish Sahara, administered by the Governor General of Spanish West Africa.
