Most visitors stop in Lamia briefly on the Athens-Thessaloniki route, but the area rewards a longer pause. The Thermopylae Pass and the modern statue of Leonidas with its eternal flame is really moving, the center for the History of Thermopylae has a quality interactive exhibition. Climb the medieval kastro for sunset views, eat in the lively Plateia Eleftherias central square, and day-trip to Karpenisi's mountain villages or the hot springs of Loutra Ipatis. The Mount Oeta National Park hiking is excellent.
There's not enough in central Lamia for more than a day. Plan around the regional sights. Summer afternoon heat in the basin can be intense. The 2017 wildfires badly damaged some Mount Oeta trails. Check current trail status. August is peak Greek-domestic-tourism season. Book ahead. Sundays in smaller towns mean reduced shop hours and limited transit. Public transport beyond Lamia thins. Rent a car for the mountain villages.
