Why visit
Pilgrims come for the Eucharistic Miracle relics in San Francesco, a uniquely Catholic experience regardless of one's beliefs. The cathedral built atop the Roman Diocletian Bridge is structurally fascinating. The medieval lanes of Lancianovecchia and Civitanova are lovely for wandering. The town is the gateway to the Costa dei Trabocchi (the Adriatic coast's distinctive wooden fishing platforms), Abruzzo wine country, and Majella National Park's wolves and bears. Try arrosticini (skewered lamb), the regional speciality.
When to avoid
There's not enough in central Lanciano for more than a day or two. Plan around regional sights. Summer afternoon heat in the basin can be intense. Many shops close 1 to 4pm for siesta. The Eucharistic Miracle exhibition has timed entry. Book ahead in pilgrimage season. Sundays in smaller Italian towns mean reduced shop hours. Public transport thins outside the town. Rent a car to explore Abruzzo properly.
