Why visit

Le Havre is one of architecture's great oddities, brutalist concrete done with such Parisian elegance that it works. Tour the Perret Apartment for a 1950s domestic interior in a model show flat, climb Saint-Joseph's Church for the kaleidoscopic stained-glass tower, and visit the MuMa Musée d'Art Moderne for one of France's best Impressionist collections (Monet painted Impression, Sunrise here in 1872). The vast pebble beach is bracing. The city is a cross-channel ferry hub to Portsmouth.

When to avoid

Some travellers find the concrete cityscape grim before they appreciate its coherence, give it a day to grow on you. The Channel weather is famously fickle, sunny mornings can become rainy afternoons. The port industrial zone is enormous and unappealing. Sundays in France mean reduced shop hours. Avoid driving in the center during rush hour, the roundabouts are confusing. Some areas around the train station have higher petty crime. Use registered taxis at night.

About Le Havre

Le Havre is a major port city in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region of northern France. It is situated on the right bank of the estuary of the river Seine on the English Channel southwest of the Pays de Caux, very close to the Prime Meridian. Le Havre is the busiest port on the northern French Coast and largest container port in France. it is the second largest city in the Normandy region of France with total population of the greater Le Havre conurbation being smaller than that of Rouen.It is also the second largest subprefecture in France, after only Reims. The name Le Havre means 'the harbour' or 'the port'. Its inhabitants are known as havrais or havraises.
