Why visit
Lebrija is more for flamenco purists than general tourists, catch a peqleña at one of the local peñas (private flamenco clubs), or visit during the September Caracoles flamenco festival. The whitewashed Old Town with its mudejar Iglesia de Santa María de la Oliva (built atop a former mosque, with extraordinary 16th-century retablo) is really lovely. The Doñana National Park's marshland edge starts west of town, birdwatching paradise. Try the local manzanilla sherry from Sanlúcar de Barrameda 30 km southwest.
When to avoid
Summer afternoon heat in this part of Andalusia is brutal, highs over 38°C are routine in July to August. Many shops close 2 to 6pm for the long siesta. There's not enough in central Lebrija for more than a day or two. Plan around Seville and the sherry triangle. Public transport beyond town thins. Rent a car for Doñana. Sundays mean almost everything except restaurants closes. The marshland mosquitoes can be heavy at dusk. Pack repellent.
