Why visit
The hilltop castle is the obvious draw, climb up at sunset for panoramic views over the red-tiled roofs and the Pinhal de Leiria pine forest stretching to the Atlantic. The Manueline cloister of the 12th-century church inside the castle walls is exceptional. Day-trip to Fátima for the Marian shrine, the Cistercian abbey at Alcobaça (UNESCO site, with the impossibly Gothic tomb of Pedro and Inês), the Templar town of Tomar, and the long Atlantic surf beach at São Pedro de Moel. The Pinhal forest itself dates to the 13th century.
When to avoid
There's not enough in central Leiria for more than a day. Plan around regional sights. The 2017 Pedrogão Grande wildfires devastated the Pinhal forest west of town and changed the landscape drastically, some hiking trails are still recovering. Summer afternoon heat in the basin can be intense. Sundays in Portugal mean reduced shop hours. Fátima fills with pilgrims around the 13th of each month from May through October, plan accordingly.
