Most travellers fold León into a Guanajuato circuit, the colonial cities of Guanajuato (45 min away) and San Miguel de Allende (90 min away) are the obvious draw draws. But León's Festival del Globo in mid-November fills the dawn sky with 200+ hot-air balloons over Loma Park, a really surreal sight. The Forum Cultural Guanajuato hosts the city's modern art and theater. Shop Plaza del Zapato for Mexican leather direct from manufacturers. Try guacamayas (chicharron sandwiches with pickled vegetables) and the tequila-based bandera shots.
Guanajuato has had elevated cartel violence in recent years. Check current advisories. León is safer than rural areas but use registered ride-share at night. Air pollution in the Bajio basin can be poor. Hot-air balloon flights book out a year in advance for festival weekend. The colonial center is small, don't expect a Guanajuato-style colonial wonderland. Driving the cuota highways is reasonable but avoid late-night intercity drives. Bring cash. Many family restaurants don't take cards.
