Why visit
The Town Hall is really one of Europe's most ornate Gothic facades, covered in 236 statues from a 19th-century reimagining. Tour the Stella Artois brewery (free Stella included), wander the Beguinage UNESCO site (a 13th-century walled women's community now university housing), and climb the University Library tower for panoramic views. Eat moules-frites and Belgian fries with mayo, drink the local Domus brewery's De Coster beer, and join the student-fuelled Oude Markt cafe scene. The KU Leuven medical campus has major biotech.
When to avoid
August can be quiet, students leave for summer and many cafes operate skeleton hours. Stella Artois tours book out in summer. Reserve ahead. The narrow streets see heavy bicycle traffic. Pedestrians beware. Sundays in Belgium mean reduced shop hours. Avoid driving in the center, it's largely pedestrianised. Some areas around the train station have late-night bar noise. Ask for a quiet room.
