Why visit
The Jěštěd Tower is really unique, ride the cable car or hike up for the panoramic Bohemian view and a meal in the rotating restaurant inside the cone. Liberec is a major winter sports town. The Bedrichov ski resort is 20 minutes away, and the iQLANDIA science museum is one of central Europe's best for kids. Walk the elaborate Art Nouveau North Bohemian Museum and the Town Hall (modelled on Vienna's). Day-trip to the sandstone rock cities of Ceský ráj (Czech Paradise) UNESCO Geopark.
When to avoid
There's not enough in central Liberec for more than a day or two. Plan around the mountains and rock formations. Winter Jěštěd weather is severe and cable cars suspend in storms. Industrial Sudeten suburbs are grim. The 2002 catastrophic floods damaged some river-front infrastructure. Sundays in the Czech Republic mean reduced shop hours. Avoid driving in winter without proper snow tyres, mandatory November to March.
