Why visit
Magdeburg Cathedral, completed in 1520, is the burial place of Otto the Great and pioneered Gothic architecture on German soil. Hundertwasser's Grüne Zitadelle, the Austrian artist's last building, is a riot of wonky pink walls, golden domes, and rooftop trees. The Magdeburg Water Bridge, the longest navigable aqueduct in the world, carries canal traffic over the Elbe. Cycle the Elberadweg trail in summer for riverside abbeys.
When to avoid
Winter is grey, cold, and tourist-thin, most museum gardens and outdoor cafes shut down. The post-reunification east German economy means some neighborhoods feel hollowed out. Don't expect English signage outside the cathedral and main hotels.
