Why visit
Most travelers skip Managua for Granada or León, but the Old Cathedral (cracked but standing since the 1972 quake), the lakeside Puerto Salvador Allénde, and the colorful Tree of Life sculptures along Avenida Bolívar are a reason to add half-day. The Huellas de Acahualinca preserves 6,000-year-old human footprints in volcanic mud. The volcano Masaya, smoking 25 km south, is one of few places on earth where you can peer into an active lava lake.
When to avoid
Do not visit Managua expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. Do the practical reading of Managua first: hours, routes, weather, crowds, and how far the neighborhoods really sit from one another. In Managua, it is better to build a tight route than to rely on long transfers between secondary stops. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Managua as a base rather than the whole destination.
