Why visit
The Bahrain National Museum traces 5,000 years of Dilmun civilization, some of the oldest urban culture on earth was here. Bab al-Bahrain anchors the lively old souq, where you can still find pearl traders. The Bahrain World Trade Center is a striking twin-tower with three giant wind turbines spanning the gap. Friday brunch at five-star hotels has become a regional institution. And it's an easy gateway to neighbouring Saudi Arabia for travelers with eVisas.
When to avoid
Summer (June to September) is very hot, highs over 40°C with crushing humidity. Bahrain has had periodic political tension between the Sunni-led monarchy and Shia majority. Check government advisories and avoid demonstrations. Public displays of affection and alcohol outside licensed venues can lead to fines. Ramadan dramatically restricts daytime food/drink in public. Visit only if respectful or after sunset.
