Why visit
Henri Pittier National Park, just north of the city, is Venezuela's oldest, cloud forests dropping to Caribbean beaches with some of South America's best birding (over 580 species). Plaza Bolívar with the Maracay Cathedral anchors the colonial center. The Gómez-era Teatro de la Ópera, the Plaza Las Delicias, and the Aviation Museum (Maracay was historically the cradle of Venezuelan aviation) round out the city sights. Aragua's beach towns of Choroní and Puerto Colombia are spectacular weekend escapes.
When to avoid
Most Western governments currently advise against all travel to Venezuela due to severe economic crisis, crime, fuel shortages, and political instability. Maracay shares Caracas's high crime rates. Don't carry valuables, avoid walking after dark, use only registered taxis. Power and water outages are frequent. Cash US dollars are essential as the bolívar is functionally worthless. Travel only with experienced local contacts.
