Few places mix old Andalusia and modern luxury so closely. Wander the casco antiguo (old town) for tapas at Plaza de los Naranjos, then walk 7 km along the seafront promenade (Paseo Marítimo) to Puerto Banús for people-watching at superyacht harbors. Beach days at Playa de la Fontanilla, hikes up La Concha mountain, and rounds at one of the 50+ nearby golf courses fill the days. The Bonsai Museum and the Picasso-rich Málaga (45 minutes away) are worth half-day trips.
Peak summer (July to August) brings stifling heat, traffic gridlock on the A-7 coast road, and tourist prices that double or triple. Puerto Banús attracts pickpockets and aggressive timeshare touts. Some Russian-mafia and money-laundering reporting has dogged the city for years. Large cash transactions can attract scrutiny. Don't drive into the old town, use parking lots at the edges.
