Why visit
The Imam Reza Shrine complex is overwhelming, a city within a city of mirrors, marble, and devotion that even non-Muslims may visit certain courtyards. The Goharshad Mosque (1418), one of the masterpieces of Timurid architecture, is breathtaking. The bazaar offers Iran's best saffron, dried barberries, and hand-knotted Mashhadi carpets. Day trips to the philosopher Ferdowsi's tomb in Tus (25 km) and the Khorasan mountains expand the visit. Mashhadi food specialties include sholeh mashhadi (lamb stew) and shishlik kebab.
When to avoid
Iran's strict dress code is firmly enforced for both genders, women must wear hijab and modest clothing, men should cover legs. Inside the shrine, additional rules apply (women receive chadors at entrances). Photography of military/government sites is forbidden. US/UK/Canadian citizens require sponsored tours. Most Western governments advise against travel due to wrongful detention risks. Check current advisories. Don't bring alcohol or any non-Islamic religious materials.
