Why visit
Matera is a southern Italy essential for cave dwellings, rupestrian churches, stone alleys, views, and long light across the Sassi. It works when the city itself is the landscape.
When to avoid
Summer peak (July to August) is very hot, cave hotels stay cool, but stone streets reflect heat all day. The Sassi has thousands of stone steps and uneven cobbles, not great for limited mobility. Cars are forbidden inside the Sassi, plan to walk with luggage or arrange a hotel porter. Include Sasso Caveoso (the more dramatic, less restored half) for the wilder atmosphere.
