Why visit
El Mozote Memorial, just outside town, is a moving testament to the civilians killed in 1981, simple white silhouettes of women and children mark the courtyard. The Museum of the Salvadoran Revolution in Perquín (45 minutes north) preserves guerrilla artifacts and an authentic FMLN camp. The hilly Morazán countryside offers quiet scenery and rural homestays with families who lived through the war. Coffee farms in the surrounding sierras produce some of El Salvador's best beans.
When to avoid
Morazán is one of El Salvador's poorest departments and tourism infrastructure is minimal. Roads can be rough, a 4WD or careful driving is wise in the wet season. Don't visit El Mozote with disrespectful tone or selfie energy. This is a memorial site. Some areas of the country still have gang issues. Morazán is usually safer than urban centers but check current advisories. Dengue is a year-round risk. Use repellent.
