Why visit
Melilla la Vieja, the four-tiered medieval-Renaissance fortress, holds excellent military and archaeological museums and offers panoramic Mediterranean views. The modernist district downtown has over 900 buildings with stained-glass facades, sinuous balconies, and floral motifs, a free open-air museum. Melilla mixes Spanish, Berber, Sephardic Jewish, and Hindu communities. The four houses of worship (Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu) are all within walking distance. Ferries to mainland Spain and easy crossings to Morocco's Rif mountains add adventure.
When to avoid
Border crossings to Morocco can be chaotic and slow. Some closures have happened in recent years amid Spanish-Moroccan diplomatic tensions. The migration crisis has occasionally turned the border zone violent. Avoid the fence area. Petty crime exists but is moderate. Don't expect Schengen-rail style ease, this is a frontier city with full border controls.
