Why visit
Mendoza is wine country at altitude, over 1,500 wineries within an hour of the city, with old-vine Malbec the signature grape. Bike tours through Lujan de Cuyo and Maipú, lunch at five-star Bodega Salentein or Catena Zapata, and tastings under Andean peaks define the experience. Aconcagua (6,961 m, the highest peak outside Asia) is reachable on day trips. The town itself has tree-shaded plazas, the Parque San Martín, and grilled meat at Don Mario or Anna Bistro that rivals Buenos Aires.
When to avoid
Do not visit Mendoza expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. For Mendoza, the practical constraints are part of the itinerary: hours, transport, weather, crowds, and the distance between worthwhile areas. Keep Mendoza practical: fewer cross-town moves, confirmed hours, and paid transport when it saves time or saves time. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Mendoza as a base rather than the whole destination.
