Why visit
The Plaza Grande anchors a perfect colonial center, the cathedral (1561, oldest in mainland Americas), the Casa de Montejo, and the Palacio de Gobierno with its bold Castro Pacheco murals. The Paseo de Montejo's gilded mansions glow at dusk. Dance to traditional jarana music in the Plaza Grande on free Sundays. Day trip to Maya sites Uxmal (1 hour) and Chichén Itzá (2 hours), or to the cenote-filled town of Cuzamá (1 hour). Yucateco cuisine is unmatched, cochinita pibil, sopa de lima, and panuchos in family-run loncherías.
When to avoid
Summer (April to September) is very hot and humid, highs of 35°C+ with crushing humidity. Hurricane season (June to November) brings rain risk. Don't drink tap water. Bottled only. The cathedral and major museums close on Mondays. Some beaches near Progreso have seaweed (sargassum) issues spring through fall. Don't drive long distances at night.
