Why visit
Red Square, the Kremlin, and Saint Basil's Cathedral form one of the world's most well known urban tableaux. The Moscow Metro, deep, fast, and decorated like underground palaces (Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Novoslobodskaya), deserves entire afternoons. The Tretyakov Gallery holds the world's deepest collection of Russian art including Andrei Rublev's Trinity icon. The Bolshoi theater's ballet and opera, Gorky Park along the river, and Russian cuisine (borscht, pelmeni, blini with caviar) round out the essentials.
When to avoid
Russia: due to ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine, most Western foreign offices currently advise against all travel, sanctions, payment-card outages (Visa/Mastercard don't work), wrongful detention risks, and limited consular support are major obstacles. Check your government's advisory before any planning. Winters here are brutal (-15°C average lows in January). Don't photograph government buildings, military, or protests. LGBTQ+ travelers face significant legal and safety risks under recent laws.
