Why visit
The historic Prinzipalmarkt is one of Germany's most beautiful colonnaded streets, with rebuilt baroque gables and arcaded shops. The Friedenssaal in the Rathaus, where Catholic delegates negotiated the Treaty of Westphalia, is preserved exactly. St. Lambert's Church still displays the three iron cages from the Anabaptist executions. A striking reminder. Cycle the 4.5 km Promenade, a leafy ring road circling the old town. The LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur holds excellent regional art. Day trips to nearby Soest and the Wasserschlösser (water castles) of Münsterland.
When to avoid
Skip Münster during the Send, the funfair on Schlossplatz that runs three times a year: nine days in March, five in July, and nine more from late October into November. The three fairs draw close to a million visitors combined, and hotel rooms in the city center get scarce while Schlossplatz and the surrounding streets stay loud and packed for the run.
